Projects
The goal of the project “Grains of Happiness” is to improve the lives of children who live in orphanages, helping them to expand a “life project” and providing them with on-going psychological counseling to help them overcome the trauma of their abandonment. Ai.Bi. also works to assist these children with the transition to a new, stable family.
This project operates in 3 locations:
- The Kien Kleang Orphanage CenterThe Village of “Lake 94″
- The Day Nursery of Kbal Tomol Village
Since 2008 in Cambodia, 931 children and teenagers in orphanages were supported by the projects in order to find a family solution.

Context
The bloody heritage of the Khmer
Cambodia is one of the poorest countries of Asia: 34% of the population lives with less than one dollar a day, about 50% of children are malnourished. One eighth of them die before reaching their fifth year of life, mostly because of preventable diseases.
The abandonment emergency
The extreme poverty conditions prevailing for the majority of the population oblige many parents to abandon their children in institutions: these are small and large prisons where these children, already traumatised by their abandonment, do not find any space to play, dream and imagine a better world.
The repeated abuse they were subjected too during the mass deportations carried out by the Khmer regime led to the introduction of strong aggressive elements into a traditionally non-violent culture. Women and children are the main victims of abuse and violence.
